BUYING A PUPPY FROM CORAZON STANDARD POODLES

Standard Poodles are not dogs happy to be left alone for long periods of time.  That is why they are called people dogs.  They are highly alert and affectionate and do not have the independent spirit of a terrier or the ability to sleep through the day without needing interaction.  Standard poodle owners tend to have forged a life on their own terms that allows them the freedom to spend time with their dogs whether at work, home, and if working out of the home in a situation where they can juggle with other family members to ensure that their dog is a proper member of the family and not simple remembered when it is time to be taken for a pee.  Often they organize extra time off for the first few weeks that the puppy is home.

While Standard Poodles appreciate any amount of walking and physical activity, puppies should not have endurance or impact exercises in their first year.  We encourage our owners to take their puppy to a Puppy Kindergarten or training classes.  This is great socialization and learning experience for your puppy and gives insightful information to help in training and understanding your dog.

We feed our puppies ACANA PUPPY AND JUNIOR.  When your puppy comes home, he will be on 3 feedings a day.  By around 12 weeks you can decrease this to 2 feedings a day.  Just make sure you give the full daily feeding split into the 2 meals.  Your vet will recommend how long to stay on puppy food.  You want to ensure your puppy does not grow too fast as this can affect his bone development.  An all-life-stages food might be recommended after 4 months.  Alternatively you may want to introduce your dog onto a raw diet.

If ever adding another dog, any breed or mixed breed dog will be company however poodles do have an affinity with each other.  They also get on very easily with Labrador and retriever types.

Poodles are great for their non-molting coats but they do need regular grooming which can be expensive if you do not do it yourself.  Poodles generally need grooming every 8-10 weeks.  Faces and feet should continue to be done as puppies to get poodles used to grooming – first full body trim is usually around 6 months.  The puppy coat will change to curls from 1 year to 18 months.  We love the Chris Christensen Large Coral Slicker Brush and the 005 Buttercomb.  Both can be ordered through Tybrushe in Alberta.

We follow Dr Dodd’s vaccination schedule.

Your puppy will receive his first immunizations prior to leaving our home at 8 weeks.  Immunizations are repeated at 12 weeks and again at 16 weeks.  Rabies can be given at 18 weeks.  It is recommended to give the rabies vaccine on it’s own.    At one year of age a repeat booster is needed, as well as the 3 year rabies vaccine. (Again, give the rabies vaccine on it’s own approximately 2 weeks later).  YOUR DOG SHOULD NOW BE COVERED FOR LIFE FOR HIS BASIC VACCINE.  A blood titre should be done before any other booster.  If the titre level is adequate, your dog is fully protected.
